Franck Ernewein’s ingenious real time mapping of worldwide activity on the social media platform Twitter turns data into art. The flashing lights on a global satellite map represent Twitter use around the globe with each flashing pixel an indicator of Twitter hotspots. It is immediately apparent that Australian usage is well below other Western nations (even when accounting for time differences). As a country are we rejecting this technology or are we simply slow on the uptake? Is Twitter a useful barometer for Australians’ general acceptance of new technologies? Tweetping may not provide the answers but it certainly displays the data in an interesting light.
